3 things you need to create a cohesive brand identity

Creating a cohesive brand identity is key to building a strong, recognizable, and memorable brand. A cohesive brand identity ensures that your customers can easily identify and connect with your brand across various platforms, which ultimately helps you stand out in a crowded market. But how does one go about creating such a cohesive brand identity? Here are three tips to help you get started.

  1. Define your brand personality

Your brand personality is the set of characteristics and values that define your brand's identity. Defining your brand personality is important because it guides all aspects of your branding, from the tone of your messaging to the colours in your palette to the design of your logo.

To define your brand personality, consider the following questions:

    • What are your brand's core values? Who are your ideal clients? Who are you speaking to? What emotions do you want your brand to evoke in your clients/customers? What 3 words or adjectives do you want people to use to describe your brand?

  2. Develop a consistent visual identity

Your visual identity is the visual representation of your brand. It includes elements such as your logo, typography, color palette, and imagery. A consistent visual identity is key to creating a cohesive brand identity.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when developing a consistent visual identity:

    • Choose a color palette that reflects your brand's personality and use it consistently across all branding materials. I recommend no more than 5 — 3 colours, an “off black,” and an “off white.”

    • Select typography that’s easy to read and reflects your brand's personality.

    • Develop a logo that’s memorable, recognizable, and reflects your brand's personality.

    • Use consistent imagery across all branding materials.

  3. Be consistent in your messaging

Your messaging is the way you communicate with your clients and customers through your marketing materials, website, and social media channels. Consistent messaging is important because it helps reinforce your brand identity and ensures that your customers have a clear understanding of what your brand stands for.

Here are some a few ideas to help you develop consistent messaging:

    • Use a consistent tone across all marketing materials.

    • Develop messaging that reflects your brand's personality and core values.

    • Ensure that all messaging is clear and concise.

    • Use messaging that resonates with your target audience.

  4. [bonus tip] Show up

In order for all of this to even matter you have to show up. Choose your platforms based on where your clients/customers hang out, create your content using your personality, identity, and messaging, and show up.

How do you show up? In whatever way feels natural and “on brand.” If you’re new to showing up online or if you have any sort of aversion or resistance to it, chances are it’s going to feel awkward and uncomfortable at first. Do it anyway. Figure out what feels least uncomfortable and start there.

Here are a few options for you:

    • Instagram

    • Facebook

    • TikTok

    • Newsletter

    • In person events

So when it boils down to it, in order to have a cohesive brand identity you need to have a clear understanding of your brand personality, a consistent visual identity, and consistent messaging. Once you have those things in place you’ll have everything you need to feel empowered to show up.
